life, that he has a plan for my good, and that he loves me unconditionally. This gives me a peace deep within my inner being. I also know that I will spend eternity with him, not because I have earned it, or by being super smart, but because I have made a choice to follow Jesus, and that choice is based on Jesus sacrifice, his death and resurrection.
I had a sin problem and so do all of us, but you and I can experience joy in the midst of all circumstances ,because, Jesus suffered and died in order that the curse of sin and death concerning us all, would be swallowed up by the victory over the Kingdom of darkness. Christ came into the world not to condemn us but to save us.
When I first came into the family of God I was encouraged to believe that the bad days were over, and if I lived for Jesus I could expect blessings of health, prosperity, healing from any sickness, and many other benefits such as prosperity. Whilst God wants to bless us, I have learned from experience and from his word, that we also go through trials, and we are told not to be surprised by this, for every one who desires to follow Jesus will experience suffering.
I don’t know all the reasons why God allows us to go through suffering, but I do know that in 1st Peter Chapter 4 verse 12 it tells us not to be surprised by the fiery ordeal, which comes upon you for your testing, because to the degree that you share in the sufferings of Christ, you will also experience great joy in his gift of salvation. Keep on rejoicing for at the revelation of his glory, you may rejoice with exultation. If you are reviled for the name of Christ you are blessed because the spirit of glory rests upon you.
I am only just beginning to accept this teaching, and to understand to some degree why God allows his children to go through a fiery trial. One story I read recently from the book written by Kay Warren called “Choose Joy” has helped me to understand how God might use my suffering to build his Kingdom. Father Damian was a missionary in the 1870’s who worked in the leper colony on the Hawaiian island of Molokai. Week by week he preached addressing the people as you “lepers” Nothing much happened until the day came, when he stood up to preach and began with the words “We Lepers.” He had contracted the disfiguring and fatal disease himself.
The beginning of Father Damian’s suffering proved to be redemptive for others. That is because Christian suffering is never suffering in a vacuum. He—we suffer with Jesus.
If we offer our suffering to God, that suffering is caught up into Christ’s suffering, a suffering for the salvation of the world.
However we must understand that nothing is missing from Christ’s once and for all sacrifice on the cross, and yet just as we have to open our mouths and share the message of the cross, for others to benefit, and believe, so our suffering also brings about the miracle of healing and salvation. We will at some point suffer, but what a great privilege to share in the sufferings with Jesus, which Christ uses, for his mighty plan of redemption for the world.
